Digital Storytelling - Week 4

This week we are finishing up our texts. I am still really excited with the Presentation Zen book. I will take a lot from that book. I am hoping to really integrate these ideas into my presentations as I move forward.

I am starting to storyboard the slides for my Pecha Kucha presentation. I am finding that process a little difficult. It is easy to plan out the slides but writing down what I am going to say on each slide seems to be taking some time. It is especially hard to get that down to 20 seconds for each slide. I am starting to make progress but it is tougher than I thought.

I also spent some time creating a Prezi. I found this process difficult at first because of some technical difficulties. Once I got over that problem I found the program to be easy to use and got some nice results. Although I do like the Prezi format, I think it only fits in a certain place. It is not something that I would like to look at for a long time. I find the same transitions over too long to be boring and repetitive. Don't get me wrong, I do like the format, I just feel that it can be overused.

  1. I agree with you about not overusing Prezi, or any format or product for that matter. What I did to make the Pecha Kucha process a little easier, was record one or two of my texts to see how much twenty seconds looked like and then went from there. I'm sure we'll all have to revise our texts when we create the actual presentation. Did you look at music to add into yours?

  2. I have gotten so much from Presentation Zen. Garr Reynold's book has transformed how I think about preparing and delivering presentations.

I had a similar experience with Prezi in that I seemed to butt my head against it, even after all of the video tutorials, before I got the hang of it. I wonder how Prezi will fare after it has lost the sizzle factor of newness. You are right that the transitions could be overused and fall into the 'Death by Powerpoint' trap where we use features because they are there - not necessarily if they enhance the presentation.

I did have an "Aha!" when I think of using Prezi as a collaborative tool much like Inspiration. The paths and transitions could be useful for mapping the flow of a course. Perhaps use Prezi to help teachers evaluate present courses and insert where effective technology could enhance outcomes?

Pecha Kucha - cha-cha. I have been hitting the constraint of how to say more in 20 seconds per slide. I am on my second draft and I am going back to the Presentation Zen recommendations. I am re-working the design and delivery to have better slides so that I can use fewer words to make my points.

  3. Mike,

The storyboarding to me has been pretty easy. With that said, I am sure that I will be editing it as it will be difficult to get very close to twenty seconds.

I had the same Prezi technical difficulties. It seems like it is trying too hard to be edgy. I would say it could be distracting but it is a good idea in theory.

  4. I agree on overusing Prezi - or anything else for that matter. Storyboarding went better for me after I timed one to see how much text fit into twenty seconds. Then I was able to type accordingly. My final timed practice worked well. Now I just have to figure out how to add music to VoiceThread.
